» Emancipation Day 5K «

Now in its 14th year, the Emancipation Day 5k brought out over 100+ participants all racing to help support the medical needs of those with diabetes in our region. And don’t feel like you have to be a ‘runner’ to enter - there were plenty of folks doing a 5k walk or the 1-mile fun walk/ run routes as well - all out have fun, do good, and build community. I and my kiddos helped cheer them on from the starting line, then a little later from one of the route check points (from past runs myself, I know a little extra boost as you’re going along can make a big difference). 🙂 Thank you Jackie for organizing, Laurel Amateur Radio Club for providing support, all those who volunteered to help make possible, and residents for coming out for what turned out to be a great morning!

Later the same afternoon was the annual Emancipation Day Parade and Celebration – It has a long and proud tradition dating back to I believe 1902! The parade featured specialty cars, Laurel Wildcats cheerleaders, and at least two drum lines. And the food featured fish, halfsmokes, fries, and more. Those with ties from all around the area come back for this neighborhood party and to celebrate with friends and family - It was a pleasure to be there to help celebrate this important Laurel tradition!

» Senior Residents & Persons with Disability Committee Meeting «

The night after our Council Work Session this past week, I also chaired the Committee Meeting for the Citizens Advisory Committee for Senior Residents and Persons with Disability. We welcomed new Committee Member Brittany Golding and also talked through our latest initiatives – Earlier this year we started compiling City resources available for member groups to share on our Committee page, at various events, and around town. And now we’re expanding to help surface and share County and State level resources. I truly appreciate the work and willingness to serve of each Committee Member – it’s part of what makes Laurel strong!
