Update to the Update on Laurel Armory Changes
Some folks have reached out to ask what the latest status is on the Laurel Armory changes discussed earlier this year. (See original post and subsequent update post.)
There have been a few updates and here’s the latest I’m aware of:

The National Boys and Girls Club is offering an after-school program this fall in the Laurel Elementary School gym for about 40 students.

It’s still being figured out if the program would move to the Laurel Armory sometime in the next year to accommodate additional K-5 students, a move that would come after renovations to the Amory. Given all proceeds, the occupancy agreement would be anticipated to have a three-year term before any renewal.

Although the National Boys and Girls Club was approved for up to $1 million in state funds for capital improvements, renovations considered to the Armory to enable their program would likely be more in the $400k range and would focus on the separate office area behind the building (previously Laurel Helping Hands counseling center), the third floor (basically re-configuring the floor for all activity rooms [vs. some office space there now]), and some refurbishment of the front lounge room.

One of the things residents asked me was impact on existing adult programs and access to the space: Plans do include the bottom floor remaining open for existing adult programs (including the exercise room) with access through the side door.

One of the other areas of concern was the historic nature of the building and how any renovations may impact: Based on what I saw, the renovations were all interior and simple enhancements not affecting the main structure. The changes would also be expected to require approval from the Maryland Historical Trust.
